Session 4: eLearning Practices in Higher Education
eLearning Practices in Higher Education
This session was designed to highlight on the micro learning environment design (MicroLED), microteaching and eLearning cases studies in higher education (HE). Firstly, a MicroLED video was prepared which contained the steps needed or involved while doing microteaching. In the MicroLED video, I chose one topic (Prokaryotes) from the unit I am teaching i.e. General Biology (BI103). I also stated the audience and provided an overview of my topic together with the learning outcomes. The T&L activities and eAssessments were identified and stated in the MicroLED video. I also explained how I am going to present in my microteaching and included the lecture slides, assessments questions and strategy I will use to engage students in my teaching.
As for microteaching, flexibility was given to us to choose our microteaching day and time by our instructor. The information in MicroLED was used to do conduct microteaching. In order to grasp the audience attention an ice breaker activity was used. Grasping students’ attention at the beginning of teaching is very important because it allows the students to become motivated about the concept being taught and become enthusiastic about it. An appropriate lesson learning outcomes which correlates with the course learning outcome was designed. The delivery mode of microteaching was online lecture and this is something we should always keep in mind while teaching. The mode of delivery will determine the effort an instructor must put in to explain a particular concept. The content taught was well articulated and presented so that students were able to understand it. Once the lesson is taught, a formative assessment was given in terms of quiz at the end of the lecture. Usually assessments are designed to see how much the student has learnt from the teaching process. Sometimes assessments also assist the instructors in designing the course content which suits the needs of the students.
The microteaching done by my group i.e. team Downes was very informative and interesting. Everybody learnt something from their peers.
