eFacilitation

In this course, there
were 3 groups namely Team Aristotle, Team Downes and Team Illich and each group
was given a week to facilitate learning on a topic using MOODLE platform.
During the group's practicum week, the group members facilitated the course as
the eFacilitators and the other two groups members become students/participants
and engaged in learning. I, as student was given the opportunity to become
course coordinator/lecturer for one week to design and facilitate a course
together with my team members of Downes. The other two weeks, I participated as
students for Team Aristotle and Illich.
All the 3 groups had
different topics to teach and different types of teaching and learning
activities and assessments. Team Aristotle’s topic focused on “opportunities
and challenges in eLearning in developing countries context”, team Illich
elaborated on “online learning in the developing countries context (Focus on PICs) - A
way forward” and my group team Downes focused on “elements of successful online learning for Pacific
Island Countries”. Team Aristotle elaborated on eLearning in higher education
for developing countries, the pedagogical tools used for eLearning, the
challenges and opportunities available for eLearning in the PICs. On the other
hand, team Illich focused on eLearning in the PICs, challenges of online
learning in terms of affordability and accessibility, students’ behaviors and the
online learning trend in PIC as a way forward. My team i.e. team Downes
highlighted on access to online learning materials, training staffs to
facilitate and students to access and use online materials, the institutional infrastructure,
support and open education resources (OERS) available for online learning.
The learning
materials for team Aristotle were e-books, open discussion forums and live chat
session with facilitators. The eAssessments were open discussion forum and a quiz
towards end of the course. The learning materials for team Illich were e-books,
case studies and online chat session with the facilitators. The eAssessments
were 1 tweet post on twitter, discussion forum and online quiz. As for my group
(Downes) learning materials were lecture slides, pre-recorded lectures, readings,
videos, open discussion forum and online chat session with the facilitators.
The eAssessments were perusall activity, discussion forum and online quiz.
I believe that team
Illich and Downes had a variety of eAssessments and did not over assess the
students. From this eFacilitation, I have learnt that we as educators need to
pay attention to the T&L activities and eAssessments while designing the
course for online learning. Also, we need to constructively align the course
learning outcomes with the T&L activities and e-assessments. In general, I
have learnt a lot of aspects of online learning and the impact or issues it has
on students and educators. It was nice to read onto the experiences shared by
our colleagues.
